IPL a boon or bane

The question that many people have been asking is “Is IPL a boon or bane?” This question is obvious because many of the Indian players did not play to their potential but all the foreign players had contributed to their fullest. If this situation persists then the foreign players will dominate and the thought of improving the domestic player’s standards has to be left out. And also after the previous year IPL many people thought IPL would be better with more foreign players. Many players are skipping international matches for IPL and also in IPL the salary is also high so many of the domestic players are taking rest to take part in the IPL. Many players are even retiring from international cricket to play in the IPL so their country will get affected. Now because of IPL People don’t come to see test matches as they used to be. One main advantage of IPL is domestic players can share their dressing room with many world class players so they can get many ideas from them.

IPL team rules

The IPL tournament has certain rules for the teams. The very important one is the use of foreign players. Although all the franchises have many foreign players they can use maximum of 4 players for a match. This is definitely a disadvantage for many teams. For example Deccan chargers has Gilchrist, Afridi, gibbs, Symonds and scott styris but they can use only four foreign players so definitely they have to leave one of them. Scott styris is a better bowler than any other Indian bowlers so if the rules had been different he would have played all the matches and that would have changed the course of the game. After the 2008 season they thought of increasing this number from 4 to 5. But it was not done because if five foreign players are playing in a team only 6 Indian players can play. IPL was mainly started to improve the domestic player’s standards. But the number of coaches and captains that a team can have is open. All the rules that apply to international matches will also apply to IPL.

IPL Auction

The players for the sides were decided in auction. Last year that is in 2008 auction was a very good one. I have never seen such a competition anywhere. All the owners are fighting for good players. In 2008 the player who was sold for the highest cost is none other than the Indian captain M.S. Dhoni. He was got by Chennai super kings for a record $1.5 million. The second costliest player of the IPL 2008 was Australia’s Flamboyant all-rounder Andrew Symonds. Many of the world’s famous players were got for a huge price because of the reputation they got. The Auction was a very famous one because of celebrities like Priety zinta, shah rukh khan. Shah Rukh is the owner of Kolkata knight riders and Priety zinta is the owner of Kings XI Punjab. This year’s IPL auction is not like the previous one because the competition is less this time. For 2009 season Pieterson and Flintoff are the costliest players with the price being $1.55.

IPL teams

Indian premier league has eight teams. They are Chennai super kings, Bangalore royal challengers, Deccan chargers, Rajasthan royals, Kolkata knight riders, Delhi daredevils, Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians. The captain for Chennai is Indian team captain MS dhoni, captain for Bangalore is rahul dravid, captain for Deccan chargers was VVS Laxman but now he was sacked and adam gilchrist was made as captain, captain for Rajasthan royals is shane warne, captain for Delhi daredevils is virendar sehwag, captain for Punjab super kings is yuvraj singh and finally the captain for Mumbai Indians is sachin tendulkar. Before the start of IPL 2008 Rajasthan royals were the least expected team but they went on to win the tournament. The whole credit should go to the coach cum Captain Shane warne. I thought Chennai would win the tournament but they missed out in the finals by a whisker. Mumbai Indians should have made it to the semi finals but they have wasted every chance they got. The auction was tight last year because all the teams were interested in getting good players for their side.
